Then the LORD answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it.

What are we here for? Why has God assembled the people known as Trinity United Methodist Church at this time and place?
In the fall of 2007, Trinity’s Long Range Planning Committee recommended that we prayerfully seek to answer those questions by revising our church mission statement. At its January 2008 meeting the Trinity Ministries Council adopted the following Trinity UMC Mission Statement.
Jesus - It’s all about HIM: Hosting God’s presence, Imitating Jesus and Making him known.
Through the Holy Spirit, with the Bible as our guide and standard, this means:
- Hosting God’s presence: the church becoming a place where God chooses to dwell and manifest his presence in fulness and freedom1
- Imitating Jesus: each person becoming like Jesus2 in:
- Spirit-filled character3
- Spirit-led decisions4
- Spirit-empowered actions5
- Spirit-impassioned invitation6
- Making him known: each person equipped and excited to demonstrate God’s presence in love and power anytime, anyplace, with anybody7
Trinity values:
- Authentic worship
- Loving one another
- Welcoming all people
- Effective prayer
- Growing in discipleship through Bible study and practice
- Community service and outreach
- Supporting missions
Footnotes:
- Ezekiel vision: to proclaim by word and action God’s message of righteousness and judgment, grace and restoration, prophesying the Holy Spirit to revive the dry bones and turn them into a glorious dwelling place for the manifest presence of God and a source of the river of living water that brings healing to the nations
- Ephesians 4:13 - the full stature of Christ
- Galatians 5:22-23 - the fruits of the Spirit
- 1 Cor. 2:16 - the mind of Christ; Rom. 8:14 – those who are led by the Spirit are children of God
- 1 Cor. 12:8-10 - the gifts of the Spirit
- Matthew 28:18-20 - the Great Commission
- Acts 8 model
Below are Pastor David’s comments as he unveiled this new mission statement to the congregation in the March 2008 newsletter:
I’m excited about the possibilities as we pursue the mission outlined in our statement. I look to see Trinity develop such a reputation for God’s presence that even the unbelievers in Annapolis will say, “If you really need to get in touch with God, find some of those Trinity folks.” I look to see our church so characterized by worship and holiness that God chooses to dwell among us and make his presence obvious through his touch on our spirits, souls, bodies, and circumstances. I look to see us as individuals so filled with the Holy Spirit, led by the Holy Spirit, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and impassioned by the Holy Spirit, that people will say, “If you want to know what Jesus is like, find somebody from Trinity.” And I look to see every Trinity person equipped, motivated and confident to carry God’s presence everywhere they go, demonstrating the reality of God in every place, in every situation, to every person.
This will not be an easy thing, and it won’t come overnight. But it is a God thing, and it will come – if each of us will make ourselves available to God and truly adopt it as our own mission.
I don’t know about you, but I want my life to count for something more than just maintaining the status quo. I can’t think of anything more exciting and fulfilling to give my life to than carrying out God’s mission. Are you with me?
By the grace of Jesus,
